If you want something futuristic-looking, design can help just as much as the function. Some of that glowy neon stuff I've seen on clothes here could work on a blanket. Maybe some kind of LED for the tabletop, too... could probably make the whole dang thing computer functional.
Maybe if you can teach me I can make unique ones for each of my friends. I have someone who is an artist who might enjoy a kotatsu that opens up into an art studio.
